About

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) publish the Human Development Report (HDR) every year since 1990. This was started by Pakistani economist Mahbub ul Haq and Indian economist Amartya Sen ( got Nobel prize in 1998).

Some Important Facts About the 2019 HDR

  • As per the 2019’s report, South Asia is the fastest-growing region.
  • During 1990- 2018, India’s HDI value has increased by 50% from 0.431 to 0.647.
  • 27.1 Cr. Indians are lifted out of poverty from 2005-06 to 2015-16.
  • Among 189 nations, 187 nations belong to the United Nations and the remaining two countries (Hong Kong, Palestine) are not members of the UN.
  • Planning Commission of India published the national Development Report 2001 for the first time on 27th March 2002. Under the prime ministership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee ( also the chairman of the Planning Commission.
  • In 2018 India’s ranking was 130 in HDI and value was 0.640.
  • In 2019, India’s ranking was 129 with HDI value 0.647, life expectancy 69.4 years, expected year of schooling 12.3 years, the minimum year of schooling 6.5 years and Gross National income per capita $6829.
